In 2016, local archeologist Harbour Mitchell III was invited by the CRHS Board of Trustees to dig test pits at the Homestead in order to establish the presence of archeological material worthy of further study and teach young people how to properly conduct archeological research. A third dig in 2017 found another midden a few yards away. These discoveries yielded a wealth of material and information about the inhabitants of the property in the late 18th century and also assisted in the inclusion of the Homestead on the Maine and National Registers of Historic Places.
